So let me get this straight for the turkey Bastet method...
1) buy two bottles of fluid 2) use baster to suck out dirty fluid into a water bottle or something 3) fill reservoir up with same amt of fluid that was taken out 4) turn wheel back and forth a bunch of times 5) take out fluid with baster and refill with new fluid 6) turn wheel back and forth 7) drain fluid out again 8) replace with new fluid 9) repeat turning wheel a third time 10) drain and replace fluid again and then be done? Where do we install the new reservoir with filter in the above step? |

Just bumping up this thread. I did mine I think 20k miles ago, don't really remember. Well I was checking the level, and it was fine, but it smelled really really burnt.
I decided to do it again today. Fresh Pentosin fluid is a very light blue fluid. Mine was a gold color. Keep in mind I used Pentosin to begin with, so it definitely changed color. I think it's because I did so many mountain runs (really tight roads so the power steering gets a work out) plus 1 full track day. So yea, replace your fluid on a regular basis. It's cheap, and only takes 5 mins if you do baster method |

This time, I'm just going to suck fluid out, refill, drive the car whenever I need to, repeat. That way, the fluid will really make its way around. I was really really surprised how bad the fluid deteriorated. Looked and smelled completely different than the fresh Pentosin. The fluid is definitely cheap enough that I'll prob be doing it every other oil change at 10k now. Maybe overkill, but it's quick and cheap.

You could of course drain it from the bottom, but I had no interest in playing with the power steering lines. Mine don't leak, so that's why I'd rather do the baster method.

I used the turkey baster method today to change my PS fluid at 43k miles. Old fluid was dark brown so it definitely needed to be done. I refilled the reservoir about 6 times and used 1 can of Pentosin CHF11s fluid i bought from Amazon for $17 (cheaper than your local auto parts store). After 1 can of new fluid the old fluid still looks dark brown so will be buying one more can and doing another series of refills next week.
The last bit of new fluid is difficult to pour out of the Pentosin can die to the spout design. Here is a hint. Take some pliers to pull the plastic spout of the Pentosin can outwards and the last 2 ounces can much more easily be poured out, minimizing any waste. |

I also just changed out the fluid and the reservoir at 86k miles. I do feel a significant difference in the steering feel. For those that didn't notice a difference, do you mind letting us know the mileage you changed it at?

Mine has 44,000 miles and to my knowledge the PS fluid has never been changed. I liked the DIY on changing the reservoir/filter, so I think I will be doing this along with the turkey baster method.

Good thing you changed it out! Quote:
I originally changed mine at maybe 60k miles. Then just did it again at 82.5k and the fluid looked shot (although not as black as some of the guys here). The only reason I did was because I regularly check the fluid level, and I just happened to smell it and it smelt so burnt. Fluid level was fine though. Can't say I've felt a difference. Haven't changed the reservoir though.

LOL at BMW saying they don't change it for fear of contamination. It's an open system with a vent. Stuff gets in including moisture in the air. I guess the markup on PS pumps is larger than on PS fluid.

Big bump to this.
Just did mine yesterday for the first time @ 50k miles. Feel negligent after extracting the fluid and seeing it. And it was low to boot. Eh. Can't believe this isn't somewhere in standard BMW service protocols. Live and learn. Turkey baster method works like a charm. Went through 1 of the 2 liters purchased using the stationary flush method -- start up, opposite lock to opposite lock, extract, repeat, etc. Fluid started to look close to normal after about 3 flushes. Nevertheless, going to drive for a couple of weeks and repeat the process. Fluid I extracted smelled burned, looked like chewing tobacco byproduct. Eff me.
