That's cool for sure, and I understand it was more of recon lap, but why NO HELMET? That's just crazy. It's not like that track had a lot of runoff. Certainly he showed he has the driving skill, bug what if a tire let go, or the brakes failed, or something else went wrong? I think it's crazy to not be wearing a helmet.

First of all, that is one great video.
So that's where the "woof" sound comes from in a DCT (you can hear it towards the end of the video). I have a 6-speed so I don't know what the "woof" sound is like as stated by DCT owners. The "woof" sound can also be achieved in a 6-speed by rev matching. However IMHO, the "woof" sound created by the DCT seems a lot more well executed because it looks like it does the rev matching on the exact RPM's everytime! You get the perfect "woof" sound whenever you drive a DCT. Hmm, with that said, I should test drive a DCT for myself... |

Obviously the guy knows what he is doing. As a 6 m/t owner I was really impressed with the DCT tranny. The shifts were quick and smooth. I just drove my friends Lambo Gallardo and the shift shock from every shift when WOT was not as quick and jolting. Anyway nice video, was very interesting.

Is it me or does the DCT in the new GTS sound almost like it has straight-cut gears or have I just not heard it in all the other M3 DCT vids?

Nice video. Very fast around a track. Engine sounds amazing except DCT shift sounds and rev matches. Seems like all dual clutch automated transmissions sound like that including 458 Italia, Audi, Nissan GTR etc.
I know the shift speed is great however, it sounds like an automatic car. The slushy shift sound is a bit too much on the torque converted automatic sound. This is how an ideal automated gearbox (it is a single clutch, though) should sound during shifts. In my book, the most perfect shift sound complemented by the most perfect engine sound and the shift speeds are still lightning fast: Funny I never thought I would one day say "it's a Lexus" and "perfection" in the same sentence: [u2b]<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hVlI2JUbnDA&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hVlI2JUbnDA&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>[/u2b] [u2b]<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/P8s1YVqc_go&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/P8s1YVqc_go&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>[/u2b]

You need to take a trip to Germany and visit the Nurburgring Nordschleife less than 75% wear helmets. Plus Ascari doesn't look like a dangerous track plus he was driving with zero traffic.

Any time you're driving at the limit, it's dangerous enough to warrant a helmet IMHO.

Yes, it's pretty nice. I think this video has nothing very special. You could film almost similar using "normal" M3. The difference between GTS and basic version is hard to see, perhaps body roll is better controlled and engine sounds perhaps slightly better. In live track conditions the difference is claimed to be huge - obviously true.
The most interesting question in GTS is DCT downshifts. Ordinary box is lousy to downshift, software allows you to downshift only when rpm is in really safe area. In video DCT seems to work better. I do some 300-400 laps per year and the most annoying thing in my car is lack of adequate downshift capabilities. For example F430 F1 is much more predictable and easier to run due single clutch installation. Don't know about 458 how it works...
