Alright, leave it to the internet to expose my ignorance. I'm a little embarrased that I couldn't get "floor throttle and release lever" right, but at least nobody called me a f%&*-tard or anything. I'll have a re-do on my way home tonight, and revisit this topic then.

I can't see BMW putting instructions in their manual on how to execute launch control, and then saying:
"Sorry, you followed our instructions but now were voiding your warranty because you utilized a feature built into your car. Better luck next time champ!"

I would think that it would be explicitly stated in the manual if any number of launches would void warranty. Also, with all the technology in these cars, I would think the computer would disengage Launch Control if the car was suffering from too much wear and tear, or if there were a limit to how many times Launch Control could be used.

In the USA on the E46 there is no limit on the number of launches you can do and it does not void the warranty but the launch RPM is lowered to reduce the wear and tear. I was told the computer actually performs a many engage-disengage sequences that increases wear but i could never tell. I have done this many times and at one point had the clutch replaced (for unrelated reasons) and the clutch did not show any wear after all the abuse. Maybe the gearbox is another story .
Outside the USA the launch RPM is higher but once you have used launch mode three dozen times orso, it will not work anymore until the dealer clears the s/w latch which will void the warranty. I am very curious to hear how the E9x differs in this regard. Also, on the E46 you can control whether to launch with maximum traction or maximum torque. The latter will draw nice black lines on the tarmac but you will go nowhere fast . Is such control available on the E9x?

I just got my 2010 E90 M3 and just broke 3000 miles and tried to use the launch control.
I followed the steps in this thread. I turned off DSC. I put the tranny into Manual Mode. I clicked Drivelogic into Level 6. I held the shift lever forward. The flag came on. I stepped on the gas. The RPM revved and held at 5500. I released the shift lever...and nothing happened. The RPM just dropped back to idle and my car is still a sitting duck. Am I doing it wrong? Or is Launch Control not available anymore on 2010 models? Thanks.

BMW couldn't have done this any more complicated... Look at how many threads have come up on this issue over time (and lately). Launching a space rocket is a piece of cake compared to this
Why couldn't LC intitiate with a press of a button, or simply by pulling both paddles... Then let the computer do all the necessary steps. Simple! |

I tried it this weekend, i might have done it wrong because all i had was a massive tire spin as opposed to a nice acceleration

Look at it in another way: Taking DSC off (which is equally dangerous for soccer moms) comes at a press of a button. Why couldn't LC also be initiated with the press of a button, or (even better) by pulling both paddles for, say, 2 secs? Not an excuse for BMW really... |

Just to make sure - you have actually had your 1200mi service performed, right? I know you said you have 3k miles, so I sure hope you've gotten the initial service done. Come to think of it, I'm almost positive that there is something they actually have to set ECU (or wherever) to enable LC during the service appointment. It doesn't just automatically become active I don't think. So maybe that is the problem, i.e maybe they forgot to do that part somehow. |
