Here's the official version.....

The first Red stripe represented Texaco, the famous American oil retail brand, who had partnered with BMW during the early days of M racing.

Blue represented BMW and Bavarian region.

The purple was used to represent the partnership and to allow for a nice transition between the two colors, blending as some may call it.

Once the BMW/Texaco partnership ended, BMW had to buyout Texaco for the rights to the red.

For those of you that are in the imaging or graphics field, here are the color names and codes used in the ///M stripes:

Pantone:
Blue — Pantone Process Blue
Purple — Pantone 268
Red — Pantone Warm Red

Paint:
blue violett GLASURIT-BMW 4000
light blue GLASURIT-BMW 5002
red GLASURIT-BMW 353

RGB:
Blue — 0 138 201 (Hex: 008AC9)
Purple — 43 17 90 (Hex: 2B115A)
Red — 241 26 34 (Hex: F11A22)

Pantone = color process (order) used by printing shops to define colors.

Paint = in this case it is refering to a GLASURIT paint code. Or a specific mix of auto paints.

RGB = Red, Green, Blue. The same process your computer monitor or TV uses to make colors.

Now don't ask me about how they stick the logo's onto the cars. 3M technology is just way too complicated

I can't even thank you enough for that, I have always wondered and never asked. I don't understand what you are saying about the purple however, are you saying the middle color is supposed to be a purple?

Pantone colors will probably be the most accurate. Most widely recognized color system for professional printers.

A dark violet (blue/purple) should have been the color descriptor John rather than just purple. Similar to some being able to see purple in Interlagos Blue. And you're welcome btw, just a little historical tidbit I had from way back.

Agree with almost everything except that the company was Castrol not Texaco. I had posted the story some time ago.

BMW is not very consistent with the ///M logo. On my tachometer, it's light blue/dark blue/ red. On my steering wheel it's light blue (albeit a different one)/purple/red. The only color that looks consistent across the two is the red.

This is for the old colors, with the violet on middle.

Do you have the new one, with blue, dark blue and red?
I am searching on google, but pretty hard to find.
Those old companies do not have brandcenter like facebook and instagram

I hate to break it to you but the company that BMW partnered with when they created the M racing in 1973 was Texaco! The Red color represents Texaco the blue BMW Bavarian region the purple is what you get when you blend red and blue that represents the partnership!
