An Interesting OFFER for my M3 today
A LOADED 09 M3 COUPE DCT 9k miles
I tested the market with an opening sale price of $57999 or Best Offer Here's one Jerk email response and my seller respond BEGINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN ****** ----- From: buyer@hotmail.com> To: seller Sent: Thursday, October 1, 2009 3:29:23 PM Subject: Your M3 for sale Hello, I'm interested in purchasing your M3. I saw the car listed on Car For Sale. I'm located here in Arlington. I am offering you $45k. May I have your VIN number as well? I need to check for warranty and repair work. thanks, Buyer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 1 Oct 2009 12:36:47 -0700 From: seller@yahoo.com Subject: Re: Your M3 for sale To: buyer@hotmail.com 45k sound good, but let me drive it another 1.5 yr and add another 20k miles and you can certainly have it Seller -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: <buyer@hotmail.com> To: seller@yahoo.com Sent: Thursday, October 1, 2009 4:09:41 PM Subject: RE: Your M3 for sale Thanks jerk, you sure do sound like the typical M3 driver. You should do a search on what they going for now, your view of the true value of the car is delusional. Even if you paid $70k for your car, doesn't mean your car is worth more now. Are you aware new M3s can be had for "invoice price"? How do I even know if the car's never been in an accident or had warranty work done or even a valid warranty without your VIN? btw, 20k more +1.5 years would put your car's value at around 30k, way to eat the inital depreciation. Yes you can quote me on this, email me 1.5 years later and let's compare. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: Your M3 for sale Thursday, October 1, 2009 6:27:38 PM From: <seller@yahoo.com>View Contact To: buyer <buyer@hotmail.com> you're welcome cheapass Baller, you sound like a chevy guy that drink budweiser lite. You dont need an M3.. you need a job at CarMax dealership and you dare ask my VIN and event suspect it been in an accident... with your generous offer I cant say NO but Heck No!!! lets meet 2.5 yr later and for the meantime.. let's fly a kite -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by emthree4me; 10-22-2009 at 06:12 PM.. |

Me thinks the true value of the OP's car lies somewhere in the middle.

I find it incredibly rude for somebody to offer $13K less than what you're asking and presumptuously demand the VIN before speaking with you.

its worth more than 53k. dealerships are selling used 09s in the 60k range. granted they aren't going to get that, but that offer was ridiculous. you shouldn't have even responded.

Why do you guys get alll bent out of shape when someon lowballs you? Just counter it or ignore it.
No one in there right mind is going to not start out with a low offer when they want to buy something.

I just ignore the very low offer types as the spread likely makes for too much aggravation / frustration in trying to close that gap. Better to distance from these 'buyers'.

LOL
It's just ludicrous what people will offer sometimes. But in this economy, you'll see more and more of that. Most will be just tire kickers. Get this...a few years back when I was getting rid of my low mileage, fully loaded 02 E46 M3 (listed at $35K OBO in 2006). I had a guy email me to setup an appointment, in his email he said, "I can offer something close to your asking price." Of course, I bit the bait. We meet, he checks out the car, test drives it, everything seems to be going well...then I ask, "what do you plan to offer?" His response, verbatim, "$24K Cash, take it or leave it...don't waste my time." So i'm like "WTF?!" I laughed, hopped in the car, drove off. What a complete waste of MY time. I ended up selling the car for $32.5K. |

im sorry dude, but i think you're a dick here. he offered something but you started the d-baggery. he is reasonable, and he's most certainly right about what he's saying. good luck selling a used M3 for over 49k. the first year you use the car, in fact, the moment you take it out of the dealership it takes the biggest hit on its value. it doesnt mean (like the 2nd or 3rd post says) that in 2 years it'll be worthless. check KBB, although in these times it's super fucking hard to sell a car at KBB.
also dont forget that people usually "pad" their asking price. so typically if you want to sell for 50k you would list it for 53k, and on the other hand the guy wants to pay say 48k so he offers 45k... so u guys, with civil negotiation, will reach a figure in the middle. it'll eventually stabilize and depreciate less later. you sir certainly lived up to the bad reputation of snobby rude M3 drivers |

I agree with the above poster...you are the fool here. All the guy did was send you a polite email then you respond with a smartass remark. You look like the idiot, not the guy making the offer.

I also agree that the OP's initial response to the potential buyer was unnecessarily adversarial. I would have simply said, "Thanks for your offer, but I will not sell at that price," and left it at that.

In any case... if you really wanted to sell the car you would have offered another price after the low ball. Just keep it and next time you really want to sell your car give it some thought and play the game. You did put OBO. FIRM would be another word for your price. GL. |

Fuck that cocksucker! 45k for an 09? Come on. He could come with a real offer. If I am shopping for a used car, I ask around, find out the Manheim price, work up from that. You could walk into any car delaership and get $45k on the spot. If he wanted to give a stupid lowball like that he should get a stupid answer.

Based on this logic then, every stupid action should get an equally stupid (or more stupidererer) reaction? At what point then do the replies just become two kids throwing sand at each other? A polite declination and a 'move along' would have sufficed, been more well-received, and wouldn't have made the OP look like a jerk.

And so it was. So the lesson I get from your narrative: have a pricing conversation before the meeting. That, or pack 'heat' <jk>

If someone offered me $45k I would ask them "Does Marcellus Wallace look like a bitch?"
