Alarm install on M3
There is a great DIY thread here.
With that thread, I was able to finish up my alarm install today. There is a difference with the M3. The hood switch already comes on our car, so you can skip that step. So basically, instead of 3 steps, there are 2 steps. Installing the ultrasonic sensor in the REAR domelight and installing the siren in the rear wheel well on the driver side. The sensor install was really a piece of cake, I think you can pull the rear domelight down with your fingers. I misunderstood the picture and pulled the clear plastic cover off the assembly. It's a lot easier than that. The hardest part was jacking up the car and removing the wheel well liner. Apparently, jacking up the car is not that easy because the right way requires a special jack tool. I just used a piece of 2x4 and it worked fine. Removing the liner is just a matter of finding the nuts and bolts and then maneuvering the liner out. So everything is installed now. The last step is to have the BMW dealer activate the alarm. BUT, I notice now that the red LED under the rearview now blinks. I'm not sure how much of the alarm is activated. Apparently, the brain unit is built into the car because all I really hooked up is that sensor and the siren in the wheel well. I'll do some research to see if I even have to activate the alarm, so this just requires that I test to see if the alarm is functional. |

Just an update. I read that you should be able to set off the alarm if you wave your arm in the car after it's armed. I did that and the alarm does not go off. The "clown nose" blinks but the alarm just isn't fully functional.

You need to get it coded by the dealer for the alarm to function at all (other than light blinking). Wish I'd read the instructions more thoroughly before I started--I struggled getting the FRONT dome light out, then wondered why there was no room for the ultrasonic module! Duh! It installs in the rear unit in about 5 minutes. Not having to install the hood switch saves a lot of time.

Alarm install instructions
Here are the official 11 page installation instructions for the E90/E92 (not specific to the M3). Refer to badfish's modifications to these intructions. Doing mine this weekend.

The dealer install price varies greatly, just search here on e90post and you will find many different prices. The install is so simple that if you are just able to take off the rear wheel and undo the fender liner, you should be able to install it. I could probably do another one in half an hour. Then the alarm needs to be activated. I'm waiting for my 1200 mile service to activate it. |

You would need to ask your insurance company about potential discounts.

I guess no one has tried this install on an 09 M3 Coupe that was produced past 03/09? Those cars aren't even here yet. I'm wondering if it is basically the same. If so...why so much more expensive?

I paid $400 and got the order in just before my car went 150. Our cars should be pretty close to each other on the line. My car is in the bodyshop and should be finished on 4/8.
