constant attention here. mostly young guys though unfortunately (save for the one drunk chick that thought I should have gotten a coupe). just had a guy pull up next to me a few mins ago on my way to work and give me an enthusiastic thumbs up. people stop me a lot when I'm parking to ask me about the car.

I don't drive it everyday but when I do it seems BMW owners are checking it out the most
When I first got it I was looking around a local forum and saw a phone pic posted of my car. That was funny

The other day some high school girl in a VW Jetta w/ her 3 friends pulled up next to me, waved for me to roll down my window, said "BMWs are for f@gs," and then proceeded to drive away. I thought "ahhh jealousy at its best."

I've been getting stopped quite a bit in parking lots when walking toward my car. Usually guys asking questions like "Is that the new M3"? A few times, guys have asked me to pop the hood so they could see the engine.
I find I get the most stares (when driving) from fellow BMW owners -- especially from other convertible drivers (regardless of brand/make). My favorite was during a drive home from work a couple of weeks ago. This guy in an SLK roadster kept zooming past me on the freeway, then slowing down long enough for me to loaf past him (in 7th gear doing a slow-ish 75MPH) then he'd floor it and zoom away again. Methinks he wanted a race. I'm above all that crap, and just kept my pace (I'm the one in the M3, afterall). When I got to my usual offramp, and came to a stop at the stoplight, he was already there. Since I had the top down on my car, he yelled over to me "Is it true that car has the same engine as the M5?" I chuckled a bit, shook my head, said "No" and pulled away (since the light had since turned green). Thought that was hilarious.

Wow, that is some real douchebag behavior right there (yes, there are female douchebags too). Haters are such ugly people.

on a side note, I've looking at a fuel efficient CUV or wagon. Happened to check out the tiguan the other day when the SA mentions the jetta sport wagen is really nice. I look at him and then say "you know, I just associate those with women, so I can't see myself getting one". he laughs and then tells me that I wouldn't believe how often he hears that, then proceeds to tell me how it's not a chick car, to which I responded, "I'm sure you're right, but the fact is I'd have to go through the explanation you gave every time someone sees me in it just to justify why I bought a girl car, which would be a pain".

The act of hurling insults at a stranger is definitely rooted in subconscious jealous feelings IMHO. Its quite likely she would behave that same way regardless of what make of car if it was a car she desired. She'd just think of a different insult or maybe just use the same one.

A lot of people think BMW owners are the assholes of the world. They firmly believe that, even if they themselves might be driving cars that cost 2x as much. It's not about money. It's just the way it is. And it came from somewhere. I'll bet you those same girls don't hurl insults at a Ferrari driver or a Maserati driver (and there's plenty of those around here, too.) BMW ownership has a stigma attached, that's for certain. Right or wrong, that's just the cross to bear. |
