You just acknowledged BMW is using an electric car term differently than its common application and definition. BMW’s description is misleading.
There is no regeneration from the braking itself. Rather there is generation from allowing the alternator to couple during deceleration, coasting and braking. Braking is not creating any more electricity in this charging scenario than coasting or decelerating. Under your view, BMW should describe alternator engagement during coasting and deceleration the same way — regenerative coasting and regenerative deceleration. |

I've heard just as many arguments and proof for either way. I've always just gone with my gut and warmed my cars up. In my head it just makes me feel better that i'm giving time for the oil to get around everywhere it needs to go before shifting and driving off. WHo really knows..🤷

I am a big believer in doing what the manual for the car says so I use reduced engine power until the cold notification goes out.
If driving it cold would hurt it they would make it so you couldn't. I do let the idle drop on the M2 but that is a very short period of time. |

Hate to be a broken record with how BMW Motorrad better handles things such as this.
With my 2022 S1000RR, on cold start, the RPMs are limited I forget what the starting ceiling RPM is. As the engine warms up, the DME for the bike begins to raise the rev limiter until the engine reaches optimal running temperature where you get full red line. |

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

speaking of engine oil warming up... my father's best friend's daughter lives in Fairbanks. When she moved there a few years ago after getting a job at the university, she brought her old BMW 335i with her. She had an engine oil pan heater installed. It plugs into an outdoor outlet in her driveway and keeps the oil around 70, even in the middle of winter. (although I guess that's a necessity in Alaska?) ![]() |

Most BMWs have a "warm up" indication of some kind in the dash. In my G45 M50, it's on the temperature gauge. In modern cars, there's no need to let it idle to warm up. That just wastes fuel. Do what BMW says: drive gently until the WARM UP indication disappears.

That's why it's called engineering. Mechanical engineering science, materials engineering science and chemical engineering science all improve the breed.

This is the same as designing the car for ease of manufacturing rather than ease of servicing, or the myriad of other compromises that need to be taken when building a complex product. |

Ok, do you want a sticker?? If you read my original response I was agreeing with the OP about warming the car up before driving off. When I said " Who really knows" it was a figure of speech. Notice there is no question mark so no question to be answered by your smart response of "the engineers..." Yeah, we know that. You can stick to whatever oil change interval you want I'll stick to my 3,000 again because I just feel better about it like warming the car up before driving off. |
