Shame on me, I actually thought the 5,400-pound flagship SUV was the M5

Yes! BMW made what’s pretty much modern Range Rovers and the X5. Can’t wait to see what they make after over 20 years of experience in this field!

G-wagons are legendary, BMW will need to pull all tricks available to them.

Just us lucky ones with the Touring. It’s actually lighter than the X7 I was previously in. Lol

Honestly I think it depends on the spec. The ones my wife’s friends drive with all the chrome are not to my taste at all, but then I have a couple of buddies that have army green and flat black with exhaust work.. those are pretty badass man-mobiles

Sounds cool… let’s hope that it’ll look good as this is probably the new design team’s first work?

So the G wagon is not an off road legend. To say it is, merely points out how out of touch and clueless to off roading you are. I do love BMW but I would not waste the money for this goal. People don’t buy G wagons for the capability, they buy it for status. Another fools mission for BMW. When do the silly endeavors for a great touring & GT car company end? Too many car companies are attempting to do too many things they shouldn’t.

Because it's silly expensive and looks distinctive == status symbol.

Same reason 1/3 of local soccer moms drive a Range Rover.
Hint - it's not for its reliability or off-roading prowess...

I know, but 4 years is pretty normal in Canada. It’s stupid expensive for the M60 too. But makes fun noises so it’s ok.

BMW (Lexus, Rivian, Grenadier, Wrangler, etc.) can copy Gwagon but there is only one, Gwagon
Gwagon is different league. Different class. It took them many decades to be where G is now. There is no substitute.

Combination of tax benefits (section 179) and status symbol imo

Summarized:

BMW is preparing to introduce a tough, off-road-oriented vehicle aimed at competing with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

According to individuals familiar with the matter, production is planned to begin in the latter half of 2029 at the company's Greer, South Carolina facility.

The model—internally referred to as the G74—will reportedly use a modified version of the platform that underpins BMW’s midsize X5 SUV.

They are chasing the Defender, Bronco, baby G-Wagen crowd.

So yes, it's happening. Preparing a story on that now

It's about time. I love my BMW M2, but I also have a Wrangler and want something nearly as capable (I off-road often) but more refined.

BMW should had never sold Land Rover to Ford. And even after selling it, they should never had waited this long to have an off-road capable vehicle. X5 these days is basically a luxury minivan. It is no more capable than an AWD Pacifica.

G-Wagen are gross divorcé vehicles. The Defender Octa is amazing, but too expensive at $160K.

BMW has a huge opportunity. They should aim for the Defender 110 X, just a little more capable, a little better riding, a bit lower price. It would be a home run.

Count me as cautiously optimistic that they will get it right.

Hmmm. This is intriguing and might be something I’m interested in. Since everybody else is doing it, here’s some of my wish list items:

-At least F-350XL off road capability

-big or small, I’d prefer a B58 or S58 6 cyl. Or whatever their newer versions will be. Steal Toyota’s LC formula (the export formula I mean, the LCs available in Africa are so cool)

-off road traction modes for tire pressure

-selectable lockers

If I were to pick one up, it’ll just be a mall crawler.
