A Fix To Leaky PS Reservoirs - Less Than $50!

Thanks to roastbeef who lent me a power steering pump for this experiment in shimming the pump relief.

The spillage is due to a drop in fluid pressure as it returns to the reservoir which increases the fluid velocity and then shoots out of the weep hole in the cap.

The power steering pump has a pressure regulator which open when the system pressure is reached and recirc fluid back to the pump suction.

Shimming the pump relief is all good with zero drawback.

1. Reduces or eliminates fluid leakage. It lowers system pressure which reduces the pressure drop and the velocity when it enters the reservoir. Also reduces fluid aeration which will quickly destroy the pump.

2. Eliminates pump destroying cavitation by increasing recirculation flow at lower RPMs when it’s needed most.

3. Increases steering effort and feel.

4. Extends the life of hoses, rack seals and PS components by lowering system pressure by as much as 50%.

5. Once the PS pump is out of the car, takes 5 minutes, a 27mm wrench, vise with soft jaws, needle nose pliers, 11mm wrench or socket, and red loctite.

6. Cost is $20 shipped for a set of 4 custom cut shims. Add $5 if you want trackable shipping. Absolutely no need to spend hundreds on reservoirs that don’t work.

But…looking for someone to test this out on track first. PM me if you’re interested and when you plan to test it on track. I’ll ship the shims and refund you upon testing results.

I’m interested and can A/B test at Harris Hill (pre vs post shim) over two weekends, or even at track depending on complexity of adding shims.

That would be a tough thing to do track side I’d imagine. You’ve gotta pull the ps pump and tear it down. Also means draining all the ps fluid and refilling.

Also happy to test but season doesn’t start here until April.

I don't recommend this as a track side job unless you have a shop or garage I'm pretty sure you have to remove the pump to do this.

The procedure is to remove the line on the rack side. I'm not sure if there is enough room to get a 27mm wrench or socket in there with the pump in the car. And then you have to use pliers to get the relief piston out since it is non-magnetic.

Lastly, there is a tiny stopper ball once you unscrew the end. It is really easy to lose it.

Yeah, it would not be a trackside change unless you are one of rhe few and extremely motivated.
