Now I'm not sure...the website says BMW Assist comes standard as part of the Ultimate Service, but if you "build" your M3 on the website, it's $750 standalone or included if you pay for the Premium Package ($2000).

Exactly. You have to buy it (for four years). You also need to buy it to get bluetooth I believe

Just added the concierge service for a extra $200. They can send addresses and # to the Nav so you can use for directions. Sort of like Google MyINFO ... but not as cool.

After 03/08 builds all Assist TCU are GSM and thus capable of receiving Google addresses (in SMS format) for free if Nav equipped...

I like the idea of having the "assistant" who can take care of some tasks. The BMW assist people told me that they can do most things you would need if they are able to look it up/purchase it online for you. Beyond the ticket purchase, reservation aspect, any other uses that you find yourself taking advantage of? Also, do you just use your SOS button to contact them or do you call with your phone? If you call with your phone hopefully you don't haven't to go through a lot of phone trees before you can talk to someone (since that would be a little distracting in the car). Thanks in advance, I having been wanting to hear from someone who had been using the service. Cheers.

However, I spoke with BMW Assist and they said that I have the newer cell system in the car and that it should work. Since it isn't working, they are researching it and letting me know. I'll update when I have more information.

Oh on the ticket purchase (airline), they took the time to research what the lowest fare was, then called me back to give me the results and then subsequently used them to purchase! There really isn't anything they won't do for you that's reasonable. I mean you can give them your credit card number and off you go. I like the fact that you can either call via your car (SOS) or your cell phone (800#). I think it's pretty cheap considering the services you provide. Oh sorry one last thing.... I once was driving back home from DC and I even called to ask them all the football scores ...what more needs to be said. Hope that helps you out some. |

Unfortunately, no USA build cars other than the X6 seem to have this right now. However, regardless ... the older style TCU is still capable of receiving a text from BMW Assist which can then be used for Navigation. So its a bit annoying all this .. because clearly, if BMW wanted to ... they could roll this out for all BMW Assist users that have i-Drive. Are you listening BMW North America ??? Give us all Google MYINFO please. |

First impression, is that the people who answer the BMW assist when you are in the car are very nice and seem to know their stuff. As a follow up on the MyInfo/Google Maps thing, it seems they are pretty confused about this currently. The latest answer was that it hadn't been activated for the US yet. A new weirdness was the BMW Assist people where surprised when they were able to transmit location information to my car. When I asked they said some 2008 cars aren't able to receive POI info. I asked if I had a new or old system - they said again that I am on the new system. So we'll see what that means.

I went through the process as instructed by Ali on Thursday which was different than the manual instruction. BMW Assist already had most of my information, I changed the password, and set-up my wife with a password. It was a very easy experience they even said that it “looked” like I was near my home address (I was in my driveway). I was also given an intro about BMW Assist and the Concierge Service ($199.00 option). I asked about the Google Maps feature that is coming and if that would be possible in my new 2008 E92 M3 in the future. Victor asked for help from “Dan” from BMW USA and he joined our conversation. Final response was that it would be a future Assist feature but there was no information about backward compatibility to the 2008 vehicles. These guys (Victor – BMW Assist and Dan from BMW USA) were very helpful and seemed to be searching for the information to answer my question. They were not technical experts that would have the knowledge about the Google Maps ability. I would visit or call your CA and have him get you set-up with BMW Assist; you have already paid for it. You might need their services. |

Guys ....
I just dug around in the trunk to figure out exactly what TCU BMW stuck in my 08 M3, manufactured in April 08 To my surprise it says .... BMW TCU1.5 MOST GSM US 84.10.9181276-01 So maybe, maybe ... a small maybe if it really is a GSM TCU the google maps capability can be switched "on" somehow .. ? Very easy to check what TCU you have. Simply open your trunk, and then lift up the trunk floor. The TCU is located in the right hand corner. Rectangular silver box with Continential stamped on it. (Continential purchased Motorola Auto Electronics who originally supplied the TCUs for BMW) Last edited by apw2607; 07-17-2008 at 04:30 PM.. |
