Oil cap leak
So I've isolated my small oil leak to only coming from the cap, which I guess is a good thing, but I can't seem to solve it.
I've tried reversing the gasket on the cap...cleaning it and putting back on. That didn't work, so I tried to take the same cap and gasket and grease it with clean oil. Also didn't work. Now I ordered the updated cap as my original was the older version. Tried the same methods as above...installed dry and new...still leaks. Then greased the gasket and reinstalled...still leaks. Is this just something you guys are living with or is there something else I can try? In all my searching, these things seemed to work for others. Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated! |

When you check or add oil, do you place the cap upside down or leave it right side up?

Get an e46 m3 cap. Larger gasket surface area seems to seal better. Also has a cool ///M logo.
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...hlight=Oil+cap http://www.amazon.com/BMW-Engine-Fil.../dp/B00AGPFC9I (Probably can find it cheaper if you shop around) I'd also recommend if you are comfortable with it sanding the lip of the oil fill spout for a smooth seal. I had some small imperfections in the paint on mine that made a good seal difficult. Stuffed a rag in the hole and some high grit sandpaper took care of it. Did it right before an oil change just in case any dust made its way into the sump. See attached : Last edited by Shredicus; 01-29-2016 at 01:47 PM.. |

It allows the oil to seep to the center around the gasket and pool at the very top. When you replace the cover, it will seep out to the outside of the gasket.
