I'd love to hear if there's any ticking at cold start, but I park in a basement and I have almost a straight pipe on my car that triggers other cars' alarms :\

It was dct.. BMW N/A wanted to hook up via Internet to diagnose. They said it was abused and voided my warranty. Service advisor and head mechanic are my buddies and said they would go to bat for me. got the call this morning. New motor on its way free of charge . Thank god for good working relation with them. They have replaced multiple parts on my n54 as well.

Wanted to record this here. The previous owner of my M3 had the bearings replaced by BMW at 56K miles via CPO Warranty in 2013. It is a 2008, e90, 6MT production 03/2008. The vehicle now has 74K miles and no issues, runs strong. Note that the rod bearings failed shortly after both throttle body actuators failed.

If it was overrevved with a DCT, can that even be classified as the owners fault? That's just a different system failing (and taking the bearings with it, under the presumption that over revving causes bearing failure).

The car had a tune + exhaust . Tune would allow for revs up to 8.4k. Every time I tracked it and hit redline the rpm was recorded. Car was returned to stock, but ovbs the rpms were still recorded by the car. I'm just thankful BMW is covering it. There was a very light tick at cold start but car has exhaust as I mentioned before, so very hard to hear any ticking on cold start . Should be ready next week. I totally understand you have to "pay to play"... But the car was dct and even with the tune I never once hit fuel cut or went above 8.3-8.4k. On top of that its a newer s65 with less than 20k miles . The motor gave out while I was cruising at 5k rpm on the freeway. It drove absolutely the same. Only difference was I felt a slight shaking and let off the gas, second I did so the car completely shut off . It was a pretty scary situation. Guessing the rod went through the motor.. Next day found oil under the car before it went to BMW . Back to the n54 for me =P haha .

At this point, it seems pretty obvious to me there's an issue. I'm sure the real list is MANY TIMES the one listed here since most M3 drivers aren't on the boards. Of the 8-9 owners I've know over the years with this car, maybe 4-5 were on the boards, and that's a skewed number because most of the guys on the boards I met at track events. Of my 4 personal friends/relatives with this car, NONE were on the board. An even better compilation would be all the bearing pics posted with 90% showing premature wear to some extent. .

2012 E92 M3 22k miles DCT just diagnosed with bearing probs found metal in oil. Will have to wait to see the full extent of damage, most likely new engine needed according to SA. Never tracked only street driven, maintenance on time, never driven that hard...
