Hey guys, unfortunately I have joined the long list of M3 owners who have blown there engine.

To share some history on the car I have a 2011 M3 ZCP with 83k at the time of failure. It is slightly modded with Gintani tune, ACM track pipes and acm exhaust. 2 month prior I had an blackstone lab done and it came back healthy with absolutely no faults. The car has been problem free and did not give me any warning signs prior to blowing. The car is always warmed up before driven hard and oil changes came before time.

I tried having the engine replaced thru Carchex whom I purchased a warranty from but was given the run around for about 3 months until I decided to bite the bullet and fix it myself.

I believe I was in 5th gear @ around 6500rpm when........Just watch. The fire works begin @ around 12 seconds

Sucks to hear man unfortunately nothing will show up on the black stone reports for a 2011 so there is no warning signs like the earlier model years. How long were you getting on the car in the video it looked like you were hauling but it could just be the perspective. This is the one thing that has got me worried going back into the e92, looks like I will just do preventative and replace the bearings at 50k. By chance how much did it end up running you putting in a new motor?

What do you mean by this? I have a 2011 and just sent my oil out to Blackstone for analysis (this is my first sample sent) with 21k miles on the car. If even an analysis won't help as an indicator of imminent problems, this is crazy

I believe he is talking about different rod bearings BMW started using which do not have the lead content. This lack of lead means you won't see increased lead in the Blackstone report as a warning of a possible/pending rod bearing failure...

Hard to tell from the wind noise, but it seems like the engine gets noticeably louder @4-5 seconds into the video?

Between run time 10-13 sec. I've heard 7 popping ...bang noises ,so personal i'm thinking it happens at that moment !
BTW....i'm always listen with my Sennheiser on .

I was doing around 125+ mph when it happen. The rod shot out the side of the block and the piston went down thru the oil pan.

It costed me around 15g for everything. I had to buy a new rack because the piston or rod put a decent size dent in it. My advice is to just do the rod bearings no matter how many miles you have.

Yes, You can actually see the sparks at around 9 seconds.

At "22 and 25 seconds" a cloud of black smoke comes out of the gap between windshield and hood !

sorry to hear you had this problem, but let me point something out.

If a Rod came out of your block it is not a bearing failure. This failure is due to either a Rod failure its self or a Rod bolt failure. Both of these issues would cause the damage you saw, not a spun rod bearing.

Eventually the bearing failure could, if beaten on hard enough after spinning. Say if someone wanted a new engine so they went out for an Italian tune up knowing at least one bearing had spun. Not saying that's what happened here, but there was a camera mounted externally.

Thanks for the clarification, I forgot about the switch in 2011. I guess that eliminates the "newer" bearing version as being of any help for this issue. Would it still be worthwhile to monitor copper levels in the later model year cars?

So this is not a ROD BEARING issue?

Also since I have a 2013, is there any reason to do BlackStone report since the new cars don't use lead bearings?
