Autocar: C63 vs M3 V8
from a member at mbworld.org:
http://mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=213450 --------------------- "There are many other things it does to a level that no other AMG product ever achieved.." "This car feels far more serious than any previously AMG-fettled C Class; it's wider tracks and completely revised suspension hunker it down to the road surface. And the motor...well, the motor is majestically over-endowed for this application." "..the C63 is a paradigm shift in direction" "I can't think of a time when I would state, unequivacally, that a fast C class would have better steering than an M3, but that time has come." --------------------------------- No link, I typed it out from the magazine. What slightly worries me, living in the UK with our bad roads, is that the M3 has softer suspension than the C63 with the sport suspension and rides better he says.. and this test was in Germany. The problem is the LSD only comes with the sports pack with the harder suspension. Ideally for the UK I think the LSD and 19inch wheels with the softer suspension would be the best all round package. By the way, he rates the 7 speed auto highly due to the blips on downshifts etc. He used to long term test the old C55 wagon so he has a good base to compare. The tester also has an M3 on order so no bias either way. |

You think they will be in favor of the M3? I think all of us in here realize that they won't. In which case everything, including our final opinion based on perf figures will be quite subjective, yes? Because I don't think with the C63 having better numbers all of us in here will declare it the better car Regards. |

So it was Monkey Harris who did this test? I was hoping to meet him when I had my work experience.
Nice to see Merc and Audi upping their game, it means M can't sleep if it's to keep going. After all, the majority of these buyers could give to S**** what AMG, quattro or M stand for and want the car with the most kudos at the end of the day. If they see Merc and Audi getting more favourable reviews, that's likely what will turn their heads.

Too bad the Merc is soooooo ugly. It's like the previous C-class had a baby with a CTS.

I agree, aside from the front 'badge in grill' thing, it looks odd. Still, I'll be picking up the mag today so will try and get it scanned and posted by the weekend - unless someone does it first. |

Yeah, I have a E46 M3. Not sure whether you know it but it is a great car, as many people here will confirm. However, I'm not in love with it. I don't think it is the best car I've ever had. I'm not particularly biased toward it or any other M car. I'd replace it with an AMG, RS, another M, etc. Whatever I think deserves my money. Anyway, I don't take it personally and nor should you. Now...Let's let this thread get back on track, eh? |

Like I said before, a V8 on meth or a V10 upgrade for the M3 is coming soon...they can't lay around and get beat...

They didn't get beat, Harris still preferred the M3.

Yeah I heard. However, I hear that there are lots of things that were liked about the C63. Not my preference but they did like the auto gearbox. They also liked the engine. I'm guessing that some reviews might even favour the C63 over the M3! Great attempt from Merc

Nowadays, when Audi, BMW, and Merc all make a good attempt at a premium segment, there probably won't be the huge difference of back in the day, as everyone is trying to make the same car. 20 years ago, BMW made driver's cars, and MB made sedate cruiser-types. Now, they all aim at the same target driver.

Autocar still selected the M3 overall. And here is what Evo said in the current issue on the C63. Not a scan but I'm quoting from the article: The reviewer is Henry Catchpole .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By the time we arrive back at AMG’s HO, the C63 has undoubtedly sealed its place next to the M3 and RS4. No longer is the obvious bronze medal of the trio. But has it beaten them? …in terms of looks yes. If I wanted to get from A to B as quickly as possible, yes. If I wanted the most enjoyable car…no, not quite. The paddle shift still isn’t quite beyond reproach especially next to the Bimmer’s fantastically slick manual And brilliant and impressive though the C63’s chassis is, the malleability of the BMW still shines through and gets the nod. *** Kind of what I expected even before reading the article. MB just does not build 'drivers' cars though they are getting better. They have shown they can build fast cars end their build quality has really improved in the last few years. The C63 is a great car and it will attract a particular type of buyer and that buyer will likely be a different type when compared to the typical M3 market. Cheers, Greg |
