So, Kaiv, did the fluid that showed up in the overflow catch can not drain back down into the main reservoir?

Like I said earlier, the right way is the BMW Motorsports GT4 Power Steering Cooler. No leaks......

Tom, #1 in diagram, is it all I need to prevent such leak. Any other parts needed? I went to my dealer and they said its a part from the 335. They checked and showed me that 2012 & 2013 m3's have the same PS reservoir.

There is an adapter that is needed for the bottom nozzle since it is slightly larger (about 1 size) than the M3 hose. This can be purchased at any auto parts store.

You could also run a reservoir that's 2 feet tall, I'm sure the fluid will have a hard time getting out up there The cooler is the upgrade to get if you're killing pumps. In my case everything is working fine and I'm happy to save the $2k. |

kaiv, thanks for listing everything.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I just installed my "kit" and will check it out at Barber in a couple of weeks. I think this is a brilliant and cheap fix for this problem. Hopefully no more splish-splash in the engine bay for me.
Thanks, kaiv!

Unless you are addressing the root cause of the problem (which appears to be the overheating of steering fluid), why all the trouble when you can do this?

^ I did this too, but it would soak thru and was still a messy situation. Was not acceptable to me. And the project was no trouble at all, kinda fun, and only 25 bucks. Compare that to the auxiliary PS coolers.

Not acceptable for me either.
And you posted a pic of a clean cloth. After an event or two it gets absolutely disgusting and have fun cleaning it. Unless you replace it each time in which case it'll quickly get more expensive that our $30 "kit" |

I've since switched to a black wristband and it hides stains very well. But point taken

I think people will be good to go if you also gave them the ID of the tubing. Nice work though.

Done, I got it ordered. The tubing ID is 4mm. I got the 4mm silicon hose from amazon.

Apologize for being a bit late to the party.
I have a heavily tracked 1M -- with the updated ps reservoir -- but still lose quite a bit of fluid on track. What needs to be done to adapt Kaiv's kit to work with the updated reservoir? Thanks. Neil |
