Going from F30 335i (2015) to 2011 M3??? thoughts?
Guys, right now I have my 335i M Sport 8AT which is my daily. Overall really good car. My weekender was a Z06 but I sold it and "downgraded" to an FR-S so I could basically beat the crap out of it all the time and it's a total blast.
But every time I drive the FR-S I miss the manual trans which I had driven daily for 15+ years prior to my F30. Additionally the steering the FR-S is awesome and reminds me a lot of my friends' various E90 cars. It's got me thinking about shuffling the garage a bit after the first of the year. Perhaps going with something more mundane but 6MT for a daily driver...GTI, Accord Sport, Mazda6, basically dumping the FR-S. Then dumping the F30 for something like a 2011 M3 Sedan. While the E90 is a touch smaller, I could still make it work with the girls in a pinch and would have a slightly bigger sedan in the garage as well for hauling them around most of the time. M3 is a different driving experience, there's always going to be a soft spot in my hear for the E90 M3 sedan, since I lusted after the M3 Sedan since the E36, it didn't exist for the E46...and came back for the E90. The M3 in E90 guise is also pretty damn reliable. I've got a couple friends that either still own or have owned them and never really had anything significant happen to them. Downsides to the M3? Brakes aren't as good as my F30, less room, older car, more expensive running costs (though maybe not if driving less than 7,500 miles/yr). M3 good track car, again maybe not as good as my F30 given the way that F30 makes power...and much more expensive to run around the track than my FR-S. Maybe a silly idea to go from F30 335i to E90 M3...probably not that much faster either...hang onto the F30 until warranty is up at 75k and then start the garage shuffle, but that's a bit of a wait... Another possibility is that my commute to work is going to go from 22 miles each way to 47 miles each way which would pile miles on the 335i at an alarming rate...

that's not a bad plan but then I'd have 120k in BMWs sitting in my garage...financially prudent side of me says no way, at least not until the house is paid off...

I'd probably just keep what you currently have.
The E90 will look/feel old (but not the good vintage old) coming from an F30.

I've had my e92 M for a little over a year and last week I drove a 340 with a bunch of M stuff. I thought it was a very good car---had good power and decent handling. I'm not sure I'd sell off the car if I owned that instead of my current car.
If you want to actually do track work, I'd go with any M series vehicle over any OEM regular 3 series. I think the chassis and engine specs just make it more enjoyable out of the box than a regular car. But if you're just going to stay on the street, I probably wouldn't make the change, unless I really didn't like the car I had. |
