no power steering after going to CW pump?
i removed the AC and swapped my 2011 pump for a pre-09 one, and ... now have no power steering. no bad noises, no groaning, no nothing. i followed the bleeding procedure (disconnected return hose, drained all the REAL gross fluid until clean pentosin started coming through, and then connected it back up).
i can only think of two things: - the pump i got was bad. possible, but not sure how to test that short of buying another one - long shot, and hope this isn't it, but i also installed the BW ps reservoir, and in doing some digging i found a post that someone lost their PS rack after installing it. something about the reservoir possibly having leftover metal shavings from manufacturing that it blew up their rack. i did also install a filter, but it's in the return line so if there *was* glitter in there, it would've gone through the system before being filtered out. idears? here's how it's plumbed in right now: i didn't see any leaks, especially ones bad enough to impact the hydraulic system.

The pre-mid-2008 pump is designed to run in a clockwise direction whereas the post-mid-2008 pumps run counterclockwise. This is the reason the pre-mid-2008 E9X M3s A/C+Power Steering serpentine belts follow a different route path. Post-mid-2008 pumps use the route shown in blue on the image below.

Oh and that’s the post ‘09 layout. Crank turns clockwise, loop runs clockwise, ps pump is on the outside of the loop and gets turned counter clockwise. Pre 09 the loop goes around the ps pump pulley, not below it.

been doing more digging on this, the production switch over date is 5/15/08. if yours is a later build date it could still be an 08 but have the ccw pump.

They also switched over all repairs at some point too so if the pump has ever been replaced they would have used a new one and converted the whole thing over.
It honestly sounds like the pump is not actually the old one, and is a newer one. Do you have a part number or anything from it? |

Great sleuthing, and this makes much more sense now. Mine is July 2008 build date from what I recall. Hence, I updated my post #2 above. Thank you.

It's really not hard at all to swap over the innards of an S85 pump if it doesn't work out.

Ended up being the pump. The production cutoff is pretty vague but it looks like you need a may ‘08 or earlier build date for it to spin the right way.
