I have a 2008 e93 m3 with 99k miles on the clock and a few previous owners. Bought the car in May of 2024 and have thoroughly enjoyed the car over the summer taking it to car shows and on spirited drives. Everything has been going great until I noticed a metallic rattle noise at 2k rpm while driving around town. The sound tends to be amplified around other cars and close buildings. I was able to locate the noise towards the front half of the car but couldn't see or feel if any heat shielding was loose. The car was just in the shop for it's 100k service where all fluids and filters were replaced. I asked the shop to see if they can find the cause. They told me they had found that the passenger side secondary cat was the cause of the rattling noise. If in fact there is a broken piece of the honeycomb material in my cat what are the possible solutions? they suggested to gut the cat, but I am looking to see what other options are out there or if anyone else has experienced this issue.
