Auction prices for 2012 e92?
Hi everyone,
Can anyone give me an idea of what the typical auction prices that a dealer would pay for 2012 E92? Not trade in. I'm trying to figure out what a typical dealer would have into a 2012 if they had a used one on their lot. Since they are only about 1 year old, I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out what this year is typically worth. I know a 2013 invoices about 64k - 65k (obviously depending on options), so I would expect it to be quite a bit below that, but I don't know how much lower is "reasonable". Thanks! |

I can't see too many being at auction yet.

Wholesale prices are crazy cheap. From $30k-$45k for 2008-2011. I would suspect that a 2012 would be $45k-$55k.

buying a used 2012 from a dealer is usually a pretty awful idea. The dealership expects roughly 60-66k MSRP for a used 2012 and then they will list how it MSRP originally for over 74k. That is great only if the original buyer bought it at MSRP but most don't so we're looking at 68ish for a well optioned M3 as invoice.

Thanks for all the great feedback.
You have both brought up exactly why I wanted to see what the wholesale prices. Most dealers are sticking firm to their 60k-65k prices, when I know they should be a lot lower. I have speced out what I want in BMWConfig.com to get the invoice for a new 2013, so I know what a new one would go for. I was thinking that I could pick up a very low mile 2012 for a good chunk cheaper than a new 2013, but as you suggest it's not working out. I guess my search continues to get more expensive. I have been looking for an M3 for about 2 months and started with looking at 2008s at 40k, and have continued to go up the chain, and now I'm at buying brand new one! And I know whats coming next, I'll buy new and still continue to spend money on "toys" for the new car. Sometimes I wish I didn't like cars. Thanks again! Have you made a good faith offer? Or are you, in effect, just teasing the dealer about whether or not you are really interested? A dealer can sense whether you are a serious buyer or not and wont usually budge on a price until he's convinced you're in the game. You're never going know where the dealer is at on the price of a car you want until you say: "I offer you this much for the car and here is a check as a down payment." That's going to take a little courage on your part but, if you've done your homework, found the car you want, then you can get the car you want at a satisfying price. |

Thanks for the feedback, fuddman.
Actually, this is great feedback. I maybe have been a bit hesitant when talking with various dealers, as I didn't know what these would wholesale at for these cars. I had a "feeling" of what they should be worth, but didn't come in firm with my offers. I guess I could have come across as "just feeling it out", and as you point out that does not incent the dealer to work with me. I have been doing my homework, know exactly what I want and have the money. With this information on "reasonable" wholesale, I'm more confident that my offers are "reasonable", and I'll need to approach it that way. Thanks again for the great feedback! |

Ok, so now it's time for a stupid question (maybe).
Does "Wholesale Price" = "Auction Price"? My understanding is that "Auction Price" is what dealers pay at dealer only Auctions, while "Wholesale" is what one dealer would sell the car to another dealer at. So I assume that the 2 prices are different. I just re-read my posts and realized that I started using "Auction" and "Wholesale" interchangeably. Sorry if this is not correct. Thanks! |

I am a dealer. Here is the internet MMR for Manheim auction sales. There is not much our there yet since it is a 2012 and the prices are not as low as you would think. A common misconception of people is that we make alot of money on used cars; well this is not always the case. I think you are better off trying to make a good deal on a new 2013. Best of luck to you.

I wouldn't. But if someone could find a 12 for $53-55k I'm sure there are people who would snatch but like I said before its probably near impossible to find unless those conditions apply
