how easy and costly is it to repaint a car? or parts, say a fender? with the original factory paint?

Not that expensive for paying the body shop but nobody paints as well as the massive robots on the factory production line even if they painted exotic cars their whole life. Also it depends what is your long term plan with the car, if you want to sell it eventually, new paint is always a red flag that you end up having to explain and can cause diminished value. Stock cars are always preferred. If you intend to keep it 4ever then no problem there.

OP painting is a lot more art than science. Unless you have a lot of experience I would let a bmw authorised paint shop to do the job. If you're not looking for perfection then do it yourself.
