E9X M3 Screws, Bolts, Nuts and Washers Information
This is a work in progress thread to combine information about BMW screws, bolts, nuts and washers with information including one-time use items, alternative options and even suggestions for better options in some cases. Feel free to post what you know.
Observations: BMW uses DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) standards for it's fasteners, while a majority of hand tools sold in America are built to best fit ANSI (American National Standards Institute) fasteners. This can lead to some occasional poor fitment of your ANSI hand tools on your E9X M3's DIN fasteners. A good example of this can be observed when removing the original BMW rod bolts as seen in the original Rod Bearing DIY thread here indicating German (or other European branded) hand tools built for the best performance with DIN standard fasteners may demonstrate a better fit on your E9X M3 fasteners. BMW tends to use odd size screw/bolt lengths making it difficult to find exact size alternatives. 33326768354 - M10 x 33 10.9 33306785433 - M14 x 1.5 x 112 33326762875 - M14X1,5X82-10.9 BMW sometimes uses colors to designate different weighted screws and adjusts their weight with the same length screw by adding more threads thereby removing material and reducing weight. Here are the three driveshaft to differential screws for the E9X M3: (photo courtesy of member DR-JEKL) BMW screw and bolt terminology and designations: How to read BMW screw and bolt designations: M14X1,5X82-10.9 M14 = 14mm diameter of threaded portion of the screw 1,5 = For Americans unfamiliar with this, the "," is used where we use a "." so 1.5 is the ration of the diameter of the head of the screw as in relation to the diameter of the screw (as measured from the threaded portion) or in this case 1.5 x 14mm = 21mm diameter head 82 = overall length of the screw as measured excluding the length (or height) of the screw head Metric system is used for size, length and grade (strength) Steel grade designators from weakest to strongest: 4.6 8.8 10.9 12.9 ZNS - zinc coating (dull silver coating for BMW OE bolts, screws, nuts and washers) U0 - includes small washer U1 - includes medium washer U2 - includes large washer High quality alternatives: VW/Audi screws and bolts appear to have high quality zinc plating similar to BMW and at much lower prices One time use OE BMW screws, bolts and nuts for the E9X M3: Connecting rod "bolts" (technically they are screws in the S65 as they do not require a nut to fasten them)- 11247834522 Reinforcement plate screws - 33326768354 Differential drive axle screws - 33211227944 Giubo bolts and nuts - 26117527475 and 26127536563 Driveshaft center support screws - 22326760945 Driveshaft connecting screw (connection of the two driveshaft pieces)- 26117551339 Driveshaft to differential screws - 26117526322 Self locking nut hydraulic power steering lines to subframe - 07129904553 Bolts and nuts holding steering rack to subframe (X2) - 32106773068 and 31356757707 Tie rod end to tie rod screw (x2)- 32106765080 Tie rod end to steering knuckle nut only (x2)- 33306787062 Front axle carrier screws (far rear x2) - 33326768354 Thrust arm aka "trailing link" to sub-frame nut only (x2) - 31106767496 Thrust arm aka "trailing link" to steering knuckle nut only (x2) - 33306787062 Control arm aka "wishbone" to steering knuckle nut only (x2) - 33306787062 Control arm aka "wishbone" to sub-frame nut only (x2) - 33326760668 Front wheel bearing to steering knuckle (x4) - 31126760203 Front seat screws to floor (x4) - 07149156953 Crush washers that are one time use on the E9X M3: Coolant drain plug to crankcase washer (x2) - 07119963200 Pressure line connecting to steering rack (X2) - 07119906464 Return line connecting to steering rack (X2) - 07119906463 Possible High Quality Alternatives: 33326768354 - M10x33 10.9 $4.16 (x9 = $37.44) Reinforcement plate screws could possibly be replaced with M10x35-10.9 ZNS $2.17 (9x$2.17 = $19.53+cost of washers) BMW/Mini Part # 07119904956 + a zinc coated washer part # __?
