Audi RS5 a "mug?!?!?"
Back in December of '09, I started a thread titled "Where is the Audi RS5?" For the record, I think it is a beautiful car, and I think it would be a joy to drive (still love my M3 more, of course).
Anyway, the SportAuto comparison with the M3 ZCP handily out-tracking the RS5 reminded me of a certain forum member (who shall, of course, remain nameless) who made the following "prediction" in post #15: "The RS5 will have advanced aerodynamics (possibly similar to those of the M5) as well as adaptive suspension with I believe is to work in combination with those aerodynamic aids. Gearbox is to be more advanced than the DSG in the S4 with the inclusion of launch control. Performance will probably only be slightly quicker to 150mph than the M3 DCT but it's projected lap times are probably going to comfortably beat the M3." In post #48, this same anonymous person states: "All I will say is that I know things about most of the German brands future products, not only VAG, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. Also you would have to be a mug not to believe that the RS5 will improve on the M3. After all it's due to be released 2 and 1/2 years after the introduction of the M3 and will be using technologies more up to date than what is present in the M3. Look at the F10 M5, another product being intro-ed soon, it will intro technology never seen in the M3, why assume that BMW only have monopoly on new technics and technologies. When you look at the facts on both closely related products (i.e. 335i and S4) you see that the more recent one (S4) is the superior one, all down to learning from it's competitors and improving on them." My original response was in post #51, and my amended response is: Although I do think the anonymous person is a good guy who knows a lot about cars (despite his perceived bias toward VAG products, rightly or wrongly) - I just couldn't help myself!! |

BTW - the "Where is the Audi RS5" thread was in the "M3 vs..." forum. And I seriously don't mean to bash Audi - their newest cars are very cool looking, and the R8 - And yes - thanks to competition from Audi, MB, etc., that is what is needed to motivate BMW to keep on improving!
But for high performance versions of honest 4-seater cars, BMW is still king!! |

One more point I had made in post#47:
I guess we'll see when the lap times actually come out. It's certainly possible the RS5 will improve on some of the lap times, but again, the extra weight (especially at the front of the car) cannot escape the laws of physics. So when you ... say the RS5 "will" improve on the lap times (instead of "might"), how is it that you can make such an unequivocal statement like that without having access to Audi's test information (just curious)? Do you have any specific data to back that up? |

Good grief...I think I'm just a die-hard BMW fan because all this Audi talk has become annoyng. 1. Audi used to be shit a while back. 2. They have a nice new line up of vehicles that look nice 3. They show some-what the same performance and suspension output.
I put all these new "Performance" Audi's in the same line-up as the new 335, "wet behind the ears". The m3 has been know and praise world-wide and for ages held many titles. When the A5 starts winning 24-hr races and stands up to its enemies and shuts them down then I might re-write my messages. 2010 24-hr Nurburgring Results(BMW takes 4 spots in top 10!!): Pos No Make Laps Time 1 25 BMW M3 GT2 154 12:17.344 2 43 Ferrari F 430 GTC 154 9:33.019 3 97 Audi R8 LMS 153 9:32.691 4 76 BMW Z4 GT3 152 10:37.803 5 102 Audi R8 LMS 152 10:51.149 6 20 Porsche GT3 Cup S 151 9:27.493 7 26 BMW M3 GT2 150 10:52.452 8 18 Porsche GT3 Cup S 150 10:41.858 9 69 BMW Z4 GT3 149 10:04.650 10 35 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup 148 10:05.529

In two tracks they tested the RS5 and in just as many the RS5 is slower than the M3:

Now I know who gives Audi a bad image and why many, such as sh****, start hating Audi. Not to hate Audi and appreciate their abilities and good work I think we simply have to ignore that person. He is not reliable.

His opinion was as valid as yours about a car that neither of you have driven, but now his position has been vindicated by facts leaving you with sour grapes. It is people like yourself, who haven't so much as sat in the new RS5 that do Audi, Audi owners, Audi fans no favors because you impress others, like a lot of folks around here including myself, as being Audi propagandists or M3 haters or both. Whichever is the case, it's sad. You, Footie and anyone else who had absolutely no firsthand experience basis to declare in advance that the RS5 was going to "improve on the M3" or "will be quicker" have plenty of to savor. Bon appétit! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eating_crow |

Either way, you will have to be a really really good driver and push your car to the limits for anything on a spec sheet to matter. A professional driver in a camery might even beat a novice in a M3 at the twisties.
