Air filters, micro filters on backorder
Doing 1200mi service today, dealer just called and said that not only does he not have the air filter or micro filter, but BMW has provided no date when they might get them. He estimates 1-2 weeks.

Has anyone figured out why this would need to be changed? The dealer I went to skipped it because they said they check it and it didn't need to be changed. It's usually something that doesn't get changed till much later, they said. But because the M3 is different, they checked mine just in case and said it did not need to be changed.

SA from the local dealer called me to let me know that the air filters came in today.
They have been on back order for a while...but expect them in soon since my dealer just got theirs...

It was clearly the first E9x M3 they'd serviced... the service manager was more concerned about how it drove than about getting the oil changed. Wouldn't surprise me in the least to discover that he didn't really know what was going on. Fortunately, I know the fluids were changed, so I figure that's priority one.

Dont follow the schedules always... Let say.. you always driving on an air poluted place.. So while driving your car always sucking poluted air.. your car performance will getting worst because of your clogged air filters.. clogged air filter will causing poor amount of air that is need for a best combustion of your engine.. For the microfilter, it is not recomended to include in 12000 mile service.. it is also situational.. Example, You feel that your aircon cooling performance become worst.. the first thing that you have to check is your microfilter.. maybe it is clogged.. you can do it by your self.. you dont need to wait 12000 miles before you change it.. i suggested that do maintenance by your self every month to maintain a good engine performance...

There was a dealer bulletin update which correctly specified what needed to be changed. Ask you dealer to be more thorough. Taking you in for service without knowing what they have isn't cool.

The reason for the confusion I believe is that many (all?) dealers figure out what needs to be done on the car by dropping your key into a key reader. Then a PC screen pops up outlining all that needs to be done. For some reason BMW coded the M3 as needing the microfilter and air filter, so that's what dealers try to perform. If BMW were to correct this situation (perhaps they already have) then you would not need to rely on the dealer to read the TIB pertaining to the 1200 mile service
