Double-X pipe w/o cats
Yes, thread without pictures and sound clips not worth too much but I decided to share some impressions.
W'll repeat that e9x m3 s65 stock sound never inspired me, most disagree but i think it's a weakest bmw v8 sound and weak compared Aston Martini, Audi or US muscle cars. So i had to find some x-pipe and muffler combo to improve that platform sound. Ordered for last christmas, installed month ago w/MPE but no go for this setup, too raspy, ugly raspy. MPE seems to work with stock pipe, with aftermarket pipes i had no luck. Still one forum member recently installed aftermarket pipe with MPE and claimed tolerable rasp and overall good sound. Today replaced muffler to SS Race also initially thought was try stock muffler. Oh, that was good one move. The alibaba Titanium double resonated double x-pipe sounds so good. No rasp, something lower rumble like subaru boxer, no high pitch. I like that sound. Maybe lil'bit too bassy and may be better paired with SS Sport or Eisenmann Sport mufflers but i have no chance to try them atm. There obvious smell having no cats, some boominess, some drone but no complaints. W'll try make some pictures and clips later this summer, after more highway miles. With freeflow exhaust and stg2 tune car is tailhappy again. |

Will this make a high pitched Ferrari like sound. I keep hearing the double x pipe does that but you mentioned it to be low and bassey. I have the super sprint race axel back and I think it is way too low and bassey at low rpms for my taste.

Sounds like any catless xpipe with a louder but still muffled Catback.
The lack of rasp is the SS muffler, the double X isn’t doing anything.

You buy a small displacement 4.0 L NA V8 with an 8400 rpm redline and you want it to sound like an Aston Martin V8, an Audi V8 or an American V8 (Ford, Chevy and Dodge/Chrysler V8s all sound differently for different reasons), all with different engine displacements? You should’ve purchased one of the other brands then because you’ll never make a s65 sound like the other engines. A have a full titanium Akra EVO exhaust system on one of my e92 M3s and a full SS AA exhaust with HFCs on my other e92 M3. The Akra setup has more bass down low but diminishes with increasing rpm. The titanium construction also alters the sound. The AA setup is the complete opposite and has a high pitched scream that continues to build with increasing rpm. Although the two setups sound differently, they still share the characteristics of a small displacement V8. No matter how hard you try, you’ll never get the s65 to sound like a Ford 5.0 L or a Corvette 6.2 L. Stop wasting money on exhaust setups because they’ll all disappoint you. IMO, the s65 is one of the best sounding V8 engines ever produced.

Here is a catless double x pipe with 1 set of resonators AFTER the dbl xpipe - which is important.

Like others have already said 'F1' sound isn't physically possible on the S65. And personally single X sounds better but a lot of American cars used Double X for performance reasons. Wonder if that's been researched on this platform. |
