New exhaust vs Used
I've decided I want the MPE. I've found the MPE brand new for $3100 and used between $2500 - $2800. I know with brand new there will be no unknown issues and I get to break in the exhaust. Used, I can save $300- $600. I like the idea of having more money on my side in the form of savings. With new, I get piece of mind. Piece of mind is priceless.
What are your thoughts? Should I go used and save the money or buy new and pay with piece of mind? Any past experiences with used exhausts ?

I've been considering the same question of new v used. For the M performance exhaust, there is a warranty period correct? Does the require installation by the dealer and all of that?
I know I can do it myself and I'd prefer to save money on a used one, but if the thing is going to crack the warranty would be pretty key. |

I bought mine brand new since the price of a used one isn't that significantly different. As for as cracking goes that is very limited and those that cracked resulted in some form of abused and most likely did not use oem xpipe and opt for something that sounds obnoxious and uncharacteristic.
I don't exoect the price of a new one to drop any time soon but then again that is just the rule of supply n demand. |

I would buy used but not at the prices you are finding them for. I've seen them go for $2k even in the forums here and I'd say that's a pretty good deal. I wouldn't worry about cracking either, it seems kind of blown out of proportion like every issue on the M3. Paying $3-4k for an exhaust doesn't make sense to me...hell neither does paying $2k which is the reason why I haven't pulled the trigger yet.
On my 335i I bought my PE new for about $1500 and sold it for about half of what I paid. I would not buy a exhaust new unless I really have to...it doesn't really wear so getting a gently used one is the way to go. But on our M's, like someone suggested, I would look into getting the OEM exhaust mod. I think that's the route I'm going to take since it costs a fraction of an aftermarket exhaust while still sounding pretty damn good.

Let's hear from the guys that bought new and still have no cracking after 2 or more years. I'd like to do this mod but don't want to deal with cracking issue.

The bottom line is the MPE is hella overpriced for what you get. The difference in sound between the oem mod and MPE is marginal but the cost difference is significant. Add to that the chance (however likely or unlikely) of cracking, then I struggle to understand what is so appealing about this exhaust.
In the end OP its your decision. |

Used. Why buy new. As long as its in good shape a exhaust will last damn near forever if its good quality. Stainless for example can last 40 years or more. Alumnized steel can last 15 years.

Had my exhaust done with the OEM mod about a week and a half ago. Could not be happier with the sound. And for $370 taxes in, great deal. Nice to save $2000.
If there is any drone, I would attribute it to an improved exhaust note rather than a drone. This is the way it should sound stock. |
