I also learned some physics today
Each car has kinetic energy K directly before the collision. At the end of the collision, both cars are at rest, and the total kinetic energy of the system is 0.
So if I'm correct about the law of conservation of energy that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed from one form to another.
Though I'm not sure how it works if one party is at rest and the other moving.
