I think the biggest risk based on likelihood and severity to deal with is a side impact. I've never heard of someone getting their spine crushed. I have witnessed 5 injuries from a side impact. Particularly the door.

...just a thought.
Yeah, seems that E46 holds up really well in crashes. I should get a track prepped and caged Miata or E36 for maximum safety.

Seems like this car held up pretty well for going the the side of a cliff. No harness, helmet or roll bar.
I think the difference is in racing you can do a pretty bad barrel roll of a hundred times and that's what the cage does protection against. Not a roll over with a few rolls but thankful new cars can do this in video.
