Do you need a ton of space? Get a 128i with the 6MT. It is the basic iteration of a modern E36 M3 with regard to size/weight/power. I loved my E36 M3 and think about the day that I can replace my beater car with an E82.
My beater now is the 2005 Mazda6 that will outlive cockroaches though. My wife bought it over ten years ago and at this point I have accepted that we will just keep it forever.
