The "wings" are side impact structures and they are totally legal. They are in the correct spots and legality boxes and thats the spot they would be if the side pods were covering them so under every f1 cars side pods you have side impact structutures right there. The only difference is those side impact structures on the merc are exposed and covered in an air foil, regardless the crash safety is still retained and will not cause anymore damage during an accident as they crumple in the exact same way just no side pods there, scarbs talked about this and kyle the ex f1 engineer talked about their legality.


What is controversial is the winglets on the impact structure, but other teams like alpha tauri have the same setup already going. The only reason teams are fussing about it, is because it is on a mercedes, a car that can actually pose a threat to the championship.
