I've used BMW and Audi CarPlay a decent bit. (MY2019 and 2020 loaners/rentals.) CarPlay through idrive style controllers is incredibly clunky.

That's a good point that a touch screen in an e9X would be a pain in the ass. Here is a demo of one working. The iDrive wheel is probably better.
