What Mazda has always done well is handling, intangible factors, this is the highlight for all their current and past cars.
In the 80's and 90's they build some pretty solid engines as the 2.3L turbo in the MX6 (Ford Probe) and the next gen 2.5L V6 in those cars were solid engines. I once owned a 1989 Mazda 3GT with the B6T 1.6L twincam turbo engine and that thing was indestructible and peppy for that time as well as fairly advanced.
