Not sure about IOS because I hate Apple, but for more recent versions of Android you can rename the BT devices. I literally have named mine F80 M3, F30 340i, E92 M3, etc. After that there's no more guessing.

Mans a Genius, my 2-er has been in and out of the shop for a while, kept getting different x1/3/5 3/4 series loaners for a period of 2 months.. felt like a BMW driver employee lol and my phones bluetooth list is vast. so renaming was brilliant!
