The biggest threat to motorcyclists are factors beyond the rider's control. You have to develop the ability to watch everything going on around you and anticipate what other drivers are going to do. This is known as "situational awareness" and you can develop it over time. You need to ride with the assumption that the drivers of other vehicles don't see you.
