I've driven the GTS and there's no comparison with the M3. In stock form, the GTS is head and shoulders faster/better handling in any measurable way.
The only thing I didn't like about the GTS is that it has a strange suspension set up where it can unsettle on high speed bumps. With traction control off, it can be quite a handful mid corner if you hit a bump - it is not as forgiving as the M3. I believe with a good coilover suspension and alignment, the GTS can be fixed though. I dunno if the GTR has the same issue.
