Any other big maintenance items/things to look out for?

I have heard horror stories about the E60 M5.
With performance driving the brakes will not last very long so that may be why it was replaced at 30k miles.

I believe most of the horror stories are with the SMG transmission on the M5. 6MT M5s looks to have good reliability. While the M3's DCT has not had many issues, I would lean toward a well driven 6MT if you are looking to keep it for a long time (over 100k miles). Less complexity and cheaper clutch replacement costs in the future.

For regular maintenance, the brakes are probably the most expensive to replace. Of course tires cost about as much but you can cut costs if you like with cheap tires... not recommended though. Spark plug replacement would also be on the list of pricier maintenance. You need to do it every 30K miles.
