When they first introduced 7 digits in TX, the plate they moved to was so ugly. The blue/red background with blue digits.
The standard plate before that with the horse, shuttle and oil rig was much nicer and I brought mine home with me to Sydney!
OP in terms of custom plates, the recommendation I have is that you get something that means something to you!
btw not sure how much plates cost where others are, but fully custom plates in Oz are charged at an annual rate of $400 a year!
