They do it to differentiate them, and eventually will be charging more for the coupe (more so than now when the differences are expanded F80 vs F82).
And I really doubt people move to a new brand because of a tail light design. In your case you just went to the coupe.
I actually think the sharpness of the E90 LCI lights are more aggressive than the coupe.
