I can tell you that I got around just fine the last 8 years with my RWD e46 325i. I put Michelin X-ICE snows on and it was excellent in the snow. The 50/50 weight distribution helps tremendously.
I don't expect anything less from my e90 M3 with snows.

I drove through two winters in Toronto with a Z4. Grip is fine if you`re careful. Only issue is clearance after a snow storm, but every passenger car will face that issue.
