Maybe I found the reason for the noise because it seemed to come from the front of the engine. Anyone know what these springs are for and how do I attatch them?
They are difficult to reattach but possible. The caps are not sold by themselves, the only way to source them is buy purchasing a used VANOS adjuster and popping the cap off carefully. The springs hold preload on the adjusters. Without them the assembly will rattle and may cause VANOS codes for slow adjustments.

Also, you can clearly see one of the screws that holds the VANOS adjuster together is backing out (under the spring).
