Here's how i do it and I used to live in a country that had speed bumps every 500ft (kidding, but we did have some serious speed bumps of varying sizes).

- As you approach the bump, slowly depress the brake to slow the car down about 90%
- just as you hit the bump, clutch in and let go of the brake
- when the rear wheels clear the bump, re-engage the clutch

As for gear selection that is entirely dependent on you and the size of the speed bump.

This formula works flawlessly every time, excluding bumps that you have to crawl over because they will cut your car in half. ITs the smoothest way to get over the longer ones and short 1 footers I assume you are not asking about the tiny, sharp ones shaped like mountains - for theses there are no techniques, just go straight and VERY slow.
