Increase the budget slightly and get a used MK7 GTi. Nippy, fun, practical, huge amount of aftermarket support (without the M tax), has all the gadgets, decent fuel economy, well built. Perfect commuter car IMO, can even get manual if you want a bit more connection. DSG gearbox has been around forever and is very reliable too.
