Mine was Nonlinear Optics. Good for about 10 years of fun research jobs, writing a bunch of papers and playing the quasi-academic game - then another 15+ years of less exciting, but more remunerative, aerospace/defense stuff. Hey, it pays for all the BMW and Canon toys I seem to want, so I can't complain.
