I think the difference is in racing you can do a pretty bad barrel roll of a hundred times and that's what the cage does protection against. Not a roll over with a few rolls but thankful new cars can do this in video.

I'm thinking high speed race cars I don't think a street car converted would need full on cage unless wheel to wheel smacking upside against each other.
