I am thinking of continuing this same habit with the M3 since rod bearing wear is mostly an issue with cold startup, not startup with warm oil 5 minutes after hard driving i.e. the rod bearings should have plenty of warm oil still coating them.

I would just use my best judgement depending on weather. There's a lot of oil in there and it holds temp pretty well once warmed up. To me the bigger question was how to get it up to temp before running, especially at national events were you have to be in grid so long before you actually run. My car did not like to build temp just idling.
