Don't worry about breaking it, it won't really snap or anything and even if it breaks it's literally a 50 cent part...
To remove that plastic clip, it needs to be pushed and wiggled down. It should then slide right off. I found using a very small flathead screwdriver helpful to just give a little separation, but may not be necessary.
