At first you just want to curse BMW for designing the starter mounting location in the engine vee, but then again, keeping the starter motor well away from the extreme heat of the exhaust headers is a good thing for longevity. I've had several muscle cars where the starter just gets baked by heat radiating from the headers (and that cranked noticeably slower when hot).
