That is a gnarly rear end.
I lost my perfect '05 E46 M3 in similar fashion, stopped on the freeway and the rear end pushed me about 6 feet (I was in neutral) into the car in front of me hard enough to destroy the front end as well.
Anyway, I was never going to sell the E46, but took the check and got a E92 three years ago and still love it; never gets old.
My first mod was painted reflectors, which it looks like yours came with.
I eventually ended up doing CSL trunk, black kidney grills, CF splitters, diffuser and side markers, and other than a set of 359s in the future I think the car is perfect.
