I've never done it in manual mode but the thread below indicates that downshift paddle has to be clicked for the gearbox to downshift after flooring the throttle, it will not automatically shift down to the best available gear as part of the "kick down" function.
Obviously, it should downshift in auto. My thinking is he isnt pulling the downshift lever while in manual mode and bogging the engine or his flat out doesnt function.
