Same thing happened to me and I remember finding other people with the same issue. I found about 2 inches of water when replacing the battery shortly after I bought the car but was lucky that there wasn't any rust. Mine cleaned up pretty well with just soap and water. Its been 1 year and I haven't found any new water.
The scary part was seeing the positive battery cable. I have no idea why it was in this state...
